About Our Work in Palo Alto

Why Palo Alto Homeowners
Trust Clear View Builders

On a Palo Alto lot the design question flips: how little should you build? On compact, expensive ground, an oversized structure shrinks the very yard it was meant to improve. Sometimes the right answer is a modest cover scaled precisely to the house. Sometimes the right answer is no structure at all, just a multi-slide glass door in Palo Alto opening the living room to the garden so the whole house lives larger. We'll tell you which one, plainly, at a free on-site consultation. We detail for Eichler and post-and-beam construction, work within the neighborhood guidelines written to protect it, verify setbacks and lot coverage before designing, and hold a C-17 glazing license so the glass and the structure are one contractor's responsibility. The written estimate is itemized, price-locked, and requires no deposit.

Local Knowledge

What 15+ Years Building
in Palo Alto Has Taught Us

15+ years building in the Sacramento area. Here's what we know about building in Palo Alto that makes the difference:

  • Palo Alto is incorporated with its own building department, and the city has well-defined review expectations for exterior work
  • Eichler and mid-century post-and-beam homes are heavily represented here, and several Palo Alto neighborhoods have design guidelines specifically intended to protect that character
  • Compact lot sizes mean setbacks, lot coverage limits and proportion are decisive -- a structure sized for a suburban Sacramento yard would be wrong here
  • Replacing original single-pane sliders with modern multi-slide or bi-fold glass is one of the most effective ways to make a smaller Palo Alto home live larger
  • Mature street trees and protected trees are common and can influence structure placement

Palo Alto FAQ

Questions We Hear From Palo Alto Homeowners Every Week

Honest answers from a contractor who's been building in Palo Alto for 15+ years.

My lot is small. Is a patio cover even a good idea?

Only if it is scaled and placed correctly -- on a compact Palo Alto lot the wrong structure makes the yard feel smaller, not bigger. Sometimes the better answer is a lighter structure, or opening the house to the garden with a multi-slide glass system instead. We will give you the honest recommendation on-site, including when the answer is to build less.

Do you understand Eichler and mid-century construction?

Yes. Post-and-beam structure and low-slope roofs need specific detailing -- a standard pitched patio cover attached to an Eichler is both visually wrong and a drainage and flashing problem. We design to the architecture. Some Palo Alto neighborhoods also have guidelines intended to protect that character, which we work within.

Can you replace original sliders with modern glass systems?

Yes -- we hold a C-17 glazing license alongside general building, so the structural opening and the glass system are handled by one contractor. On mid-century Palo Alto homes this is frequently the highest-impact change you can make.

Who permits the work?

The City of Palo Alto. Covers, decks over 30 inches, structural openings and gas or electrical work generally require permits, and setbacks and lot coverage limits matter on compact lots. We verify all of it during the estimate and handle submittal and inspections.

Two hours away -- does that work?

For a substantial project, yes; we block Peninsula work into continuous weeks. For a small repair, hire local. We would rather tell you that than take a job we are not the right fit for.
