About Our Work in Los Altos

Why Los Altos Homeowners
Trust Clear View Builders

The architect gave your house walls of glass, a low roofline and a floor plan that points straight at the backyard. Then the decades happened: single-pane sliders that stick, no shade over the patio, an indoor-outdoor idea that never got its second half. Finishing it takes two skills that rarely live in one contractor. Structure, because a cover on a post-and-beam roof has to be detailed to the geometry or it ruins both the look and the drainage. And glass, because a multi-slide glass door in Los Altos needs a proper structural header, not a handyman guess. We hold a C-17 glazing license alongside our general building licenses, so both halves become one design, one permit package, one price, locked in writing. Free on-site estimate, no deposit required.

Local Knowledge

What 15+ Years Building
in Los Altos Has Taught Us

15+ years building in the Sacramento area. Here's what we know about building in Los Altos that makes the difference:

  • Los Altos is incorporated, so permits go through the City of Los Altos, with Los Altos Hills and unincorporated areas handled separately
  • Mid-century and Eichler-influenced homes have low-slope rooflines and post-and-beam structure, which means an attached cover has to be detailed specifically rather than using a standard pitched attachment
  • Replacing original single-pane sliders with modern multi-slide or bi-fold systems is one of the highest-impact upgrades on this housing stock, and it requires proper structural headers
  • Los Altos design review considers how structures read from the street, so drawings and material selection matter to approval
  • South Bay summers are warm and dry with cool evenings, which makes covered outdoor rooms usable across a long season

Los Altos FAQ

Questions We Hear From Los Altos Homeowners Every Week

Honest answers from a contractor who's been building in Los Altos for 15+ years.

I have an Eichler or mid-century home. Can you build a cover that does not ruin it?

That is exactly the concern worth having. Post-and-beam homes with low-slope roofs need a cover detailed to match the geometry -- a standard pitched patio cover attached to an Eichler looks wrong and can create real flashing and drainage problems. We design to the architecture, and we would rather talk you out of the wrong structure than build it.

Can you replace old sliders with multi-slide or bi-fold glass?

Yes -- we hold a C-17 glazing license in addition to general building. On mid-century homes this is often the single highest-impact upgrade, since it restores the indoor-outdoor connection the house was designed around. It requires proper structural headers, which is why one contractor handling both the structure and the glass matters.

Who permits work in Los Altos?

The City of Los Altos for city addresses; Los Altos Hills and unincorporated areas are handled separately. Covers, decks over 30 inches, structural openings for glass systems, and gas or electrical all generally require permits. We prepare and submit the package and manage inspections.

You are over two hours away. Is that practical?

For a significant project, yes -- we block Peninsula work into continuous weeks so the job runs straight through with one crew. For a small repair, hire someone local; we will tell you that honestly rather than take the job.

How is the project priced?

Free on-site consultation, itemized written estimate, price-locked so the number does not change unless the scope does. No deposit required to get to that point.

Are you licensed for structural and glass work?

Yes -- California licenses #1092253 and #1059877 including the C-17 glazing specialty, full insurance, 5-star Yelp rating, and top 11% of California contractors per BuildZoom. California licensing is statewide.
